UEFA to implement second group stage in the Champions League to expand the number of matches in this competition |
According to information from The Times, UEFA is considering
implementing a second group stage in the Champions League to expand the number
of matches in this competition. This would be the new Champions League from
2021
The same newspaper states that there would be a consensus
between UEFA and the Association of European Clubs (ECA) for the competition to
expand its number of games with the creation of this new round.
This would mean that a finalist team would play 17
games (six from the first group stage, six from the second, two from the
quarterfinals, two from the semifinals and the final) instead of the 13 that
has been playing so far (six of group stage, two of the round of 16, two of the
quarter, the semifinals and the final).
Return to an old format of UEFA
The dispute of a second group stage would not be strange in
the Champions League, since from 1999 to 2002 a second round was
included among the 16 best teams of each season. The two best in each
group qualified for the quarterfinals.
