Coronavirus: Spain will decree the state of alarm throughout the country due to the severity of the covid-19 epidemic

The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, held a council of ministers by teleconference.

The government of Spain will decree this Saturday the state of alarm throughout the country.
In an institutional statement, the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Friday that an extraordinary Council of Ministers will be held on Saturday to decree the state of alarm for the next 15 days.
"The state of alarm is an instrument included in the Constitution to face crises as extraordinary as the one facing the world and our country," Sánchez said.
The president said that the Council of Ministers will adopt a set of decisions aimed at mobilizing state resources to protect all citizens.
The state of alarm, one of the exceptional situations contemplated by the Spanish Constitution, can be declared for a period of 15 days and includes measures such as population confinement or evacuation orders.
Spain, and specifically Madrid, has become one of the great world centers of the covid-19. The country registers more than 4,000 infected and 120 deaths. It is the second European country with more cases after Italy.
It is so exceptional that it has only been applied once in the recent history of Spain: in 2010 during a covert strike by air traffic controllers when the government militarized the air traffic control towers.
