New Delhi, India. - At least 1,500 were quarantined in northern India, potentially infected by a single person, a Sikh guru, who died of the Covid-19 coronavirus and was suspected of being a "superpropagator" of the coronavirus, according to a local manager.
After traveling through Italy, the European epicenter of the pandemic, and Germany, the 70-year-old guru Baldev Singh was preaching in fifteen villages in the mostly Sikh Indian state of Pundjab before falling ill and dying , AFP said.
In India, the government decreed a health alert on Wednesday and the confinement of the population for 21 days. Stronger quarantine measures were taken in the areas affected by Baldev Singh's visit, with food delivered to the home.
"The first of these 15 villages was visited on March 18 and we estimate that there were between 15,000 and 20,000 people involved after the following," said Gaurav Jain, senior magistrate of the Banga district, where the guru resided.
"Medical teams are prepared and there is regular surveillance," he added.
So far, 90 people who were in contact with the guru have tested positive for the new coronavirus, said Vinay Bublani, head of the local police. The result of the tests of another 200 people is expected to come out soon.
The guru and his two collaborators, also infected, did not respect the mandatory self-confinement rules after returning from Europe, starting the tour to preach, which could have caused massive contagion.
This case has created great dust in India. Even a popular singer who lives in Canada, Sidhu Moose Wala, posted a song dedicated to Singh on the Internet. "I have spread the disease, running through the town like the shadow of death," he dedicates.
The song has been viewed 2.3 million times on the Internet in less than two days, and Pundjab Police Chief Dinkar Gupta asked the population to listen to it to be aware of what has happend.
Second most populous country on earth after China, with 1,300 inhabitants, India has had 873 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 19 deaths, a balance well below that of other countries, but experts consider that many cases are not detected due to lack of tests.
