Coronavirus: what are the main symptoms of covid-19 and how can you protect yourself

The coronavirus continues to spread around the world as governments and health personnel strive to flatten the spread of covid-19 infection.

The main symptoms of coronaavirus are tiredness, fever and a prolonged dry cough. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that about 80% of those infected have mild or even non-existent symptoms. But a minority develops covid-19 (the disease caused by coronavirus) in its most serious forms.
Coronavirus: what are the main symptoms of covid-19 and how can you protect yourself
The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that about 80% of those infected have mild or even non-existent symptoms. But a minority develops covid-19 (the disease caused by coronavirus) in its most serious forms.
How can you recognize the difference?

Cough and fever

SARS-Cov-2, which causes covid-19 disease, infects the lungs.
The main symptoms are tiredness, fever and a prolonged dry cough.
Dry cough means cough that produces itching, but not phlegm, according to the British National Health Service (NHS).
To be considered continuous, the cough must last for more than an hour or three or more cough attacks must occur in 24 hours.
This can lead to shortness of breath, which is often described as intense pressure on the chest, shortness of breath, or a feeling of suffocation.
You are considered to have a fever if the temperature is above 37.8 ºC. This can make you feel hot or, on the contrary, with cold or chills.
Sore throat, headache, and diarrhea, as well as loss of smell and taste, have also been reported, although the WHO does not include the latter in its official list of covid-19 symptoms.

Different gravity

According to a WHO analysis based on a study of 56,000 patients, 80% of those infected develop mild symptoms (fever, cough and, in some cases, pneumonia).
14% have severe symptoms (shortness of breath and shortness of breath) and the remaining 6% have serious illnesses (lung failure, septic shock, multi-organ failure and risk of death).
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, but only six (the new would be the seventh) are known to infect people.
Experts consulted by BBC say that symptoms should be monitored and, if they remain mild, they can be treated at home with rest and some medication that relieves discomfort, such as paracetamol.
It is necessary to have special attention in the case of the elderly and immunosuppressed people and to consult a medical professional in case of doubt.

How is Coronavirus transmitted?

It is not yet known exactly how or when the virus became infectious for people, but it is known that it is transmitted between humans.
According to the authorities, the incubation period (that is, how long it takes for covid-19 symptoms to appear after contracting the infection) is 1 to 14 days.
According to scientists, each infected person can transmit the virus to between 1.4 and 2.5 people and the spread can occur before covid-19 symptoms appear.
This worries doctors, since viruses that infect the lungs, such as the new coronavirus, are very effective in spreading due to coughs and sneezes and the secretions they expel.
The WHO recommends staying more than 1-2 meters away from other people.
If these secretions fall on an object or surface, anyone can get it if they come into contact with them and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth.
That is why it is essential to maintain strict hygiene and, above all, frequently wash your hands with soap and water.
