German retailers demand next store opening
Berlin News Update: - German retail is pushing for all stores to open as quickly as possible, according to statements by the German Trade Federation (HDE).
‘Reopening of retail trade across the country should be allowed as soon as justifiable in terms of health policy,’ said Stefan Genth, executive director of HDE, Ugobleno News reported.
Genth warned that if city center businesses were to remain closed for too long, it would threaten ‘a huge wave of bankruptcies and, as a consequence, permanent damage to our vital city centers as well.’
This warning comes a day before the decision of the federal government and the federal states, which is expected today, Wednesday, about a relaxation of the strict rules imposed due to the spread of the coronavirus.
Genth demanded that any possible relaxation of store closings be applied regardless of company size, retail space, or retail sector.
‘No retail business should be at a disadvantage. Any other measure would only lead to legal uncertainty, confusion and distortion of competition,’ he said.
Already last week, the HDE called for the opening of stores on Sundays, for the rest of the year, without conditions or restrictions, so that retailers could make up for part of the turnover lost by the state-imposed store closings due to the coronavirus.
According to HDE, retail companies lose billions of euros every day due to willing store closings. Genth also stressed that 1.7 million jobs are linked to stores currently closed.
