Massive resignation of doctors in hospital in the Colombian Amazon
Bogotá: - About 30 doctors from the only public hospital in Leticia, capital of the Colombian department of Amazonas, resigned this Monday, arguing that they lack guarantees to care for Covid-19 patients and protect themselves from possible infections.
We allow ourselves to present our massive resignation to the provision of health services to the ESE Hospital San Rafael de Leticia, which takes effect from 7:00 p.m. today, April 20 of the current year, says the letter addressed the director of the hospital, doctor Roberto Sierra.
San Rafael is the only state medical center in a department of almost 66,000 people, which also borders Peru and Brazil, the Latin American nation with the highest number of cases from the pandemic (with 2,575 deaths and more than 40,581 cases in the last balance).
The specialists and general practitioners who signed the letter argue that there are no biosecurity measures to care for patients with the new coronavirus, nor do they have the supplies and equipment necessary for the correct and efficient provision of services.
According to the text, due to the absence of clear protocols against the pandemic, internal chaos and contamination have been generated in areas that do not serve these types of patients. Furthermore, health professionals require medical payment guarantees for the provision of services.

Sierra, director of the hospital, assured that a mutual agreement was reached between the medical personnel and the Amazon government, so that the health personnel will return to their work.
However, health workers have yet to comment on the resumption of activities.
The Amazonas department registers four confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, out of a national total of 3,977 infected and 189 deceased.
The massive resignation joins other protests in the sector claiming against the precariousness of the health system in the midst of the pandemic.
In recent days, Colombian doctors have also reported discrimination and refusals to access public transport, markets and housing by people who consider them sources of contagion.
President Iván Duque has said that the protection of health personnel exposed to possible contagion in the emergency department is primarily the responsibility of their employers.
To stop the spread of the disease, the government decreed a health emergency and a national confinement that will rule in principle until May 11.
