Pope Francis creates commission to reflect on women deacons
Vatican News Update: - Pope Francis announced on Wednesday the creation of a new study commission to reflect on the possibility of ordaining female deacons, thereby reactivating a controversial debate within the Church.
After having recently received in audience the leadership of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, guardian of dogma, the pope ‘decided to create a new study commission on the female deaconate,’ said in a statement from the Holy See, reported AFP.
The new international commission has five women, including French theologians Anne-Marie Pelletier and Swiss Barbara Hallensleben.
In May 2019, the pope had indicated that members of a first study commission, instituted in August 2016 to examine the role of female deacons at the beginning of Christianity, had widely divergent views to reach a conclusion.
The deaconate is currently reserved for men in the Catholic Church. Deacons are ordained to deliver the sermon at mass, celebrate baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
The idea was reactivated in October by bishops from nine Amazon countries, meeting in a regional ‘synod’ at the Vatican to find solutions to the shortage of itinerant priests in this great region.
As Pope Francis creates commission to reflect on women deacons, what will be the out of this commission? will they make women deacons or not? the answer remains unknown till after they conclude their studies on whether women can be ordained as a deacon or not.
