White King, born on May 31, is the first white lion to come to the world in a zoo in Spain.
Juan Luis Malpartida, director of Mundo Park in Guillena, near Seville, falls apart with him in hugs, caresses and cares, like giving him milk with a bottle.
He tells Ugoblenno News that ‘the birth was bad,’ because the mother, a white lioness brought from Thailand four years ago, ‘has given birth 14 or 15 days after being completed.’
The baby has grown too big, very heavy at the moment of giving birth. ‘Imagine how bad the animal has suffered along the line, I don't even know how it has given birth,’ explains this 73-year-old man who has lived surrounded by animals since he was a child.
Three days after seeing that he was not suckling from his mother, because he ‘did not count’, Malpartida withdrew the baby, which he says was ‘hypothermic, hypoglycemic, dehydrated’.
This Wednesday, however, ‘it is the first day that I see him with his head raised, trying to run.’
And the mother? ‘She is so calm,’ says the park director.
‘He wanted to break free of the calf, put itself in heat again and have the male cover it.’
White King will be one of the great attractions of this zoo with about 1,000 animals and which, after three months of closure due to the coronavirus, will reopen today, Thursday 10th of June.
The Mundo Park team will continue to take care of the little lion and feed it for now, explains Malpartida.
‘When we see that we can reintegrate him with the parents, we will. Although it is a delicate subject, because later it becomes a competition for the father.’
